Named for the Marquis De Lafayette, a wealthy French military officer who assisted Washington at Valley Forge, the city of Fayetteville, Georgia was established in 1823. After the Civil War, the railroad built a line running between Atlanta and Fort Valley. As was often the case, the railroad brought with it a great deal of growth and prosperity. The line stopped running through town in 1939. Fayetteville’s population is now approximately 14,000 people. The historic courthouse square in downtown Fayetteville was once the city’s center of business. Many of the buildings around the square were built in the last decade of the 1800s and the early 1900s.
